An Exploratory Study on Caregiving Sons
Choi Hee-Kyung

Abstract
This article analyzed the experiences of son caregivers who are taking care of their elderly parents. Qualitative research method was adopted to examine their motives and characteristics of caregiving, meanings and emotions, problems and coping styles, and service needs. Data were from in-depth interviews with 6 sons who were primary caregivers using in home services or daycare services in Busan area. The participants had proper conditions for caregiving such as retirement, flexible work schedule, or close residence. Their narratives revealed a wide range of emotions and meanings based on caregiving experiences rather than on gender. Their main motive of caregiving was filial obligation. They took charge of caregiving roles by task oriented approach utilizing public services and managing diverse tasks. They commonly expressed burdens and happiness of caregiving experiencing problems caused by limited skills of caregiving and communication. Family conflicts were entangled in the issue of caring elderly parents, which were improved after sons¡¯ caretaking. To deal with difficulties of caregiving, the sons endured the situation rather than express what they suffered. Several suggestions were made for caregiving sons including as follows: introducing paid family leaves and care allowances; providing more affordable and flexible care and respite service for working caregivers; expanding services fulfilling male specific needs such as meal delivery, personal care and in home nursing; and implementing programs to establish networks for sharing experiences and emotional supports.
